a little bling

Yep, things got away from me before I could get this post together. Some family events sidelined my progress, but I did finish my Holidays project!

So without further ado…here is my holiday garland. I wanted to make something festive for our mantel this year that was not super “Christmassy” so to speak. I love decorations that are pretty, homey, warm and cherry. I used colors that are not limited to the traditional seasonal pallet so that we can keep it up all year or use it for any other event or holiday. It will also look adorable in Henry’s nursery at some point!

I started off needle felting the balls, but it was taking forever so I switched to a washing machine method. I loosely made each ball from fluffy wool and then knotted them into a pair of tights. I ran them through the washing machine on hot, and voila! Felted balls. Unfortunately, they came out somewhat misshapen. I did some “repairs” with the needle, but just enough to keep them ball-like enough to string onto some candle wick thread.

I’m pleased with the result. It’s simple, yet pretty and festive!

So cute and simple! I’ve been wanting to try and make felt for awhile! Got any tips?

Get fuzzy roving, not the silkier roving (for spinning) because it felts better. Also, here is a tutorial on making the balls that is similar to what I did (but I didn’t follow this): http://www.handmadefelttoys.com/washing-machine-wash-wash-wet-felted-balls/

Another project I’ve done that’s really fun and useful is felted soaps. My friend Trinity taught me how, and here’s a link to her version of the project on her blog: http://trinknitty.blogspot.com/2007/09/september-1st-moving-day-for-suckers.html

Then there’s knitting with wool and felting that….! I am a big fan šŸ™‚
